March 16, 2000 ~ I am FREE!

I'm free. No more homework for a whole week. Ugh. I've been going so fast lately, I don't know how to slow down.

Today was supposed to suck crap, but it ended up being a great day. It started off horribly, however. I got up really early, studied a tiny bit (but not nearly as much as I needed to), then went to work in the Café. Made bagels. Got kind of pissed off at the management.

To explain: Morgan works with me there. Every morning we come in, and guess what. Just like every other single morning this year, there are NO defrosted bagels because dinner shift forgot to pull them. So we carry the bagels up and down stairs and load them into big trays. Morgan takes them up to cook in the big oven in the main kitchen. He comes back down very frustrated, because one of the cooks got mad at him for setting the bagels down on the very edge of the table in order to open the oven, then put them in. It takes up a little corner of the table for 20 seconds every morning, and then he's done and doesn't bother them any more. One of them will get really vindictive, too. She will move the bagels when his back is turned, or she will turn off the oven while they are cooking so that when he comes back to take them out they are still frozen. It is really petty and ridiculous. EVERY MORNING they complain about it, and this morning one of the cooks complained to a manager. So Morgan tells the manager very politely his side of the story, and the manager tells him that he shouldn't be using the big oven anyway. He needs to use the tiny pizza oven down stairs. *growl* The tiny pizza oven will only fit SEVEN bagels at a time, as opposed to the SEVENTY+ that we can fit into the big oven. Plus, it takes a half an hour to warm up in the morning and twice the time per load. Aside from that, the pizza oven won't cook frozen bagels anyway. I honestly love the people at Marriot. Our managers are great, kind people. But this was ridiculous. We would be way behind every morning, the customers would be furious, and we would get out REALLY late. So, anyway, they are going to have a conference about the issue. I am not being lazy. I honestly think that allowing us the twenty seconds of counter space in the mornings would increase our productivity by fifteen times and also reduce our stress a great deal. *sigh* I hope they let us continue to use the oven upstairs.

ANYWAY... Sorry for the long tirade. Had to get that out of my system. (I hope you're still reading). Later this morning though, Morgan found a completely unexpected scholarship award letter in his mailbox (!!!). He hadn't applied for it or anything. Someone just gave it to him. Amazing. We don't know how much it is for yet though. Anything will help.

Next, I took my grammar exam. I think I did really well. Extremely well. I hope. I think. We'll see. After class, Dr. Bradshaw gave me a list of the English courses to be offered for next year. I want to take them ALL! I am so disappointed that I can't possibly... So many courses, so little time. I can't wait to get registered for next year. I ate a quick lunch, and then went to Restoration Lit., an took the exam in there. I'm pretty sure I did well on it, too. When I turned it in, Carol gave me back my paper, and told me it was excellent. She called me the "Queen of close reading." There were only two corrections throughout the whole thing. The rest was "Very nice close reading," "Yes!" and "Good!" I love it when I get papers back like that. An excerpt from her closing comments: "A beautiful close reading--a model--and well-written. The thesis on loss, regret, melancholy vs. religious faith and hope is excellent..." *beams* The paper was on Milton's sonnets. That put me in a good mood. Then, in my writing course, Shawn's presentation included live banjo and violin music. He's only been playing the violin for a year and he is really quite good, no matter how humble he is about it. Next was my crew meeting for The Well. We worked on getting a new story up, but it was slow going, and the pop-ups won't work. It was fun, though.

I am going to a movie for free tonight! Lisa works at the theater, and can get us in for free, so we are going to see American Beauty. I don't know what to expect. We may also eat out somewhere. They didn't have any vegan food in the cafeteria, so I only had green beans and pineapple slices. Healthy, eh?

Hm. I should probably update what happened this last week. Well, over the weekend, I worked madly on a paper for Romanticism, and I did tons of reading. It rained REALLY HARD, and it was wonderful. On Sunday, however, it snowed in little flurries that didn't amount to much. It was really weird, because for the last several weeks, it had been very warm weather. So anyway, I went out in the freezing weather because I had to get a picture of some daffodils to illustrate The Well. I laid on my belly in the oozing, freezing mud to get the angle just right and took some pictures while Morgan laughed at me. I got mud all over my skirt and coat.

I also took my final for my History course, and I think I did pretty well, but I really don't know, for I have never had a class with Professor Otterness before, and I'm not a history major either... so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

It's been misty and raining lightly all day.

Other than that, I have been reading all sorts of stuff and going crazy turning in papers and studying for exams. Now, however, I can just relax. I have to work one short shift at the café tomorrow, but it should be easy, and it's not until one, so it doesn't cut into sleep time at all. I'm going to try to really get a ton done for this page in the next few days, so be on the lookout for lots of updates. (Look on the "What's new" link at the bottom of the introduction page to see any recent additions).
