July 31, 2000 ~ The Sky Is Falling!

I am the checker at the door to the cafeteria. The building the cafeteria is in has been under construction for the last few months. Every lunch shift I get to attempt to talk to customers over the sound of jackhammers, nail-guns, and backhoes. Today, however, it was more than the noise that made for a less-than-sane workplace.

As I was giving someone her change, I notice some strange noises coming from the upper corner of the wall. A few seconds later, some dust started to shake loose, and then the wall started crumbling inward. A large chunk of cement broke away, careening down and landing nearby. Someone started yelling up at the hole, "Hey, WHOA! STOP! There are PEOPLE in here." The noises stopped. Little bits of wall continued to flake away on occasion. A light fall of dust settled over the tables.

I could see the sky through a hole in the wall. I picked up the bigger piece of cement and took it home as a memento.

Ah, the joys of campus construction.
