June 9, 2001 ~ Building a Home

Another great benefit of moving twice a year (I promise, this will be my very last entry about moving... until the end of the summer when we move again) is the chance to completely rebuild our home periodically.

Tonight I finally finished doing just that.

It is always exciting to take nothing and turn it into something livable. This is what the room looked like before we started reorganizing and moving in:

And this guy was one of the the current residents (don't worry, I evicted him by making him craw onto a piece of paper and taking him outside):

After we did a major cleaning and rearranging of furniture, however, things started to shape up. I hung tapestries and pictures, organized all of our books, put down rugs, and generally made the place livable. The room is too small to take a picture of the whole place at once, so I stood in the middle of the room and a series of shots while turning around 360 degrees. It makes the place look a whole lot bigger than it really is, but you'll get the idea.

If you were to walk in the door and turn around and look back at it, this is what you would see:

The glare makes this shot look kind of strange. It does give a pretty good idea of how, in order to fit a home into a small dorm room, everything must be very organized and in it's place. That's my dresser, holding all of my clothes and also all of the spare linens. On top of it are our teas and incense. The bookshelf in the lower right corner holds a lot of our modern fiction (we call these the candy books, because they are lighter reading), and on the back of the door are things like towels, bathrobe, raincoat, etc.

If you turn your attention to the left of the door, this is what you would see:

At the right is Morgan's collection of books on Wicca for his research. Behind that shelf (and pretty much out of sight in this picture) is his dresser for all of his clothes, the printer, and some milk crate shelves containing cleaning supplies and toiletries. As you can see, to the left in the cubbyhole is one of our computers, Horus.

If you turn a bit to the left, this is what you would see:

This is Vulture, our computer that was built out of scavenged parts from other computers (hence the name). It's the computer I normally work at, because Vulture is kind of slow, so Morgan needs Horus' faster capabilities since he does graphics work that needs more ram and video card capabilities (that, and he also plays a lot of high speed networking games *smile*). Above Vulture hangs a beautiful cross-stitch embroidery that my aunts made as a wedding gift to us; it reads, "Melissa and Morgan joined in love this day, December 16, 2000."

Turn a bit to the left, and you have:

These shelves hold all of my writing references and manuals, literature anthologies, other general reference books, art books, children's literature, and social criticism. On top of them are all sorts of little mementoes and trinkets of spiritual significance. Mixed in is some of my pottery.

And next to these shelves:

This is the huge monster shelf, which holds all of our classic literature, the Harvard Classics series, Morgan's Latin books, and most of our history books. The goat scull Morgan picked up at an antique shop. Behind the brown scarf to the left are most of our kitchen supplies.

To the left of the big shelf is:

The reading corner with the beanbag. Our window is behind that white curtain. Don't worry; you're not missing anything. There isn't much of a view: only a rotting fence, a junk heap, and an ugly wall. The only pretty site is some vines that are growing up the side of the building (that are probably tearing it apart). The bottom bookshelf holds a bunch of books about various religions. The top bookshelf holds mostly several more books of classical literature. Under the green trunk to the left is the refrigerator.

Finally, if you turn to the left once more:

We stuck the bed in the second cubby in order to free up some floor space. There at the head of the bed is the cage of our beastie friend, Ali.

And that's it.

Footnotes:

weather: Pretty much overcast and humid.

bookmarked: Read a little bit more of Hunchback of Notre Dame.

writing focus: writing focus: Nothin'.

observation: Uh... I've been stuck inside all day, first at work, then forcing myself to finish unpacking.

saint: Surprised Morgan by working really hard all evening to finish unpacking and have the room all clean.

sinner: I got a little resentful when he came hope and sat on his butt instead of helping me finish.

random: I had the most annoying little kids' song stuck in my head earlier, but now I can't for the life of me remember which one.

mood: It feels really good to organize and be done packing!

online journals:

"As a formality, I casually look through [my peephole] whenever somebody knocks, which isn't often, but it has never deterred me from opening the door, regardless of who was there or whether I even recognized them. Not once have I looked through and thought, oh, I'm not opening the door for this asshole."
