February 29, 2004 ~ Always

Sunday.

February Wordgoddess collaboration: "Always."

(Except in the event of catastrophic planet-wide destruction:)

Sunlight in the deep winter will always warm me and cheer me.

Autumn leaves will always stun me with their vivid colors, and I will never tire of the smell of their decay.

The ice will always come, the snow will always fall. The land will always rest in the winter. I will always feel a childish joy at watching snowflakes fall.

Green things will always appear in the spring. Spring flowers will always delight me as I see each new species open.

Oppressive summer heat will always tire me, but I will always love fireflies, bare feet on grass, swimming in mountain streams, and dandelion fluff on the wind.

I will always feel more at ease with trees for company than in a crowd of people.

The stars will always shine to guide me in the night; they will always remind me that I am incredibly small yet still a part of this incredibly vast universe.

The sound of trees swaying in the wind will always calm me. The forest will always sooth me.

Wild creatures will always leave me with a sense of awe and thankfulness when we cross paths.

I will always love the feel of bark against my cheek, the sound of rushing water, the taste of wild plants on my tongue.

So long as I can still walk, I will never stop hiking and climbing mountains and spending hours and days in the wilds.

As all things in life, the storms will always come; the storms will always pass. Troubles will always find me, but, like thriving, growing, creative Life, I will find a way to bear them.

Snowdrops. My first sighted spring flowers this year, last Tuesday.

Footnotes:

weather: It was warm, and then we had a snow storm, and now it's warm again.
bookmarked: I read Life of Pi this weekend, and I couldn't put it down. What a beautifully-written book, with an absolutely delightful main character. Spiritual, philosophical, and very, very touching. It made me think. A lot. It's been a while since a book has done that to me. Thanks to Lisa and Elise for recommending it.
observation: Eastern Towhees flitting about the hemlocks next to the building where I work.
hours hiked this year: 26.5
hours volunteered this year: 29.5

online journals:

"That's what sucks, you know? It's not the fact that I'm neurologically screwed. It's the fact that sometimes I'm not, and then I remember what it was like to not be afraid." ~ Jen in this entry of TranceJen.
