March 23, 2004 ~ A Weekend in My Life, Illustrated. Part III

This is part of a series. You may want to start with the first entry.

Saturday, March 20th.

Another beautiful, clear, warm day.

Morgan fell in love with the bellbottoms, and begged me to wear them that very day, please. Heh. So I did. And I went to my volunteer shift at the Co-Op. It's three hours on Saturday morning, both to help out and to get a very nice discount on our organic groceries (so that they're a little cheaper than normal non-organic groceries).

My position is listed as "Cashier / Date Checker / General Floor." So, basically, I do whatever comes up. Check people out, stock the shelves, check the dates on merchandise and pull it if it's past date, refill the re-used shopping bag containers, clean, and help customers find what they're looking for.

Morgan met me at the Co-Op at the end of my shift (and took those pictures), we did our shopping, then we went home to eat lunch, which was leftovers and a few other things we threw together.

lunch

Hummus sandwiches, lemongrass and chili rice noodle soup, some leftover chili and some ginger ale that Morgan picked up at the Co-Op for a treat.

After lunch, Morgan made some delicious fried bananas for dessert.

In the afternoon on Saturdays, we almost always take a long hike together somewhere, so we headed out to the Blue Ridge Parkway (about ten minutes from our house), hoping that it would actually be open after all this warm spring weather. On the way there, however, we randomly decided to stop at the North Carolina Arboretum instead, since neither of us had ever been.

Since it's the off-season, there wasn't much happening at the arboretum, and a lot of things were closed. There were flowers blooming everywhere, though, and lots of trails to hike.

We admired all of the plants, then went on a hike down one of their trails.

Afterwards, Morgan and I sat on the porch and talked for a while.

The sun made us both very sleepy, but we had to get back home, as Morgan had invited our friend Joel and his wife Sarah over for dinner that night. Sarah couldn't come, it ended up, unfortunately. But we still had a great evening.

Morgan made an amazing meal. Fennel-orange slaw over spring greens for my first course, while he and Joel had the same with rare, sesame-crusted, seared tuna and skewered fennel-seared shrimp over top. They each had a glass of Clos du Val Chardonnay with that. The main course, for them, was pan-seared lamb loin chops with a peppercorn-cabernet demi glace and spring vegetables stewed with sage. Instead of the lamb, I had cremini mushrooms prepared in the same way. Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage for them with the main course. And I made my raspberry crisp with Belgian dark chocolate on the side, and they had locally-made vanilla ice cream over it. Delicious.
