July 4, 2004 ~ Winning Wolves and Working

Sunday.

Winner, Diarist Awards, 2004, Quarter One
"Outstanding Entry"
for
"A Lesson in Honesty and Love"

I just wanted to thank the finalist selection panel and everyone who voted this quarter. I'm touched that my entry moved so many people.

I also wanted to mention the excellent entries that I was competing against. Grouse captured the somber end of a sixty-five-year-long romance, and Julie wrote an excellent tribute to a small Louisiana town. Good entries, both.

But most of all, I want to thank the wolves, for they were the stars of that entry. I have a feeling that my entry won not so much for what I wrote, but instead for what I wrote about. These enchanting creatures with whom I work twice a week are quite charismatic. They've stolen my heart, and I'm glad to learn that I'm not alone in my love for them.

I'm sorry I've not been writing, lately. I've been working fourteen or more hours a day for the past several days, and I will continue to work these long hours until the twelfth. It's the student Residency at the MFA writing program, and it's one long haul through to the end, no weekends or evenings to catch my breath.

Today is Sunday, and Independence Day, and I've been working all day long instead of my normal shift with the wolves. I miss them terribly. Last Wednesday, on my last evening off, I went with Morgan to see the wolves one last time before the chaos hit. Running my hands through fur, I knew why I had needed to come. My only question was, How am I possibly going to go without them for the next thirteen days?

Since a few people asked, and since I'll probably not be writing much with this crazy schedule, here are, in one place, all of the wolf entries that I've written:

February 16, 2004 ~ Meeting the Wolves
February 25, 2004 ~ A Lesson in Honesty and Love
March 11, 2004 ~ Extreme Sports
March 18, 2004 ~ Noshi
March 23, 2004 ~ A Weekend in My Life, Illustrated. Part IV
April 8, 2004 ~ Goodbye, Thor
April 11, 2004 ~ Too Cute
(the end of) April 13, 2004 ~ Excessive Luck, Raccoon Mating Rituals, and Wolf-Dog Pup Details
May 10, 2004 ~ Thunder and the Wolves
(question #14 in) May 14, 2004 ~ Answering
May 16, 2004 ~ Renaissance Wolf-Wranglers
May 30, 2004 ~ Of Cats and Toads and Wolves
(part of) May 31, 2004 ~ Unconsidered

Thank you again.

Footnotes:

weather: Rain every day.
bookmarked: No time to read.
observation: An old wooden fence across a field, four buzzards standing on consecutive posts, wings spread wide, displaying. They were perfect, like statues, huge birds they are.
hours hiked this year: 99
hours volunteered this year: 208
watching: Morgan and I saw Secret Window a little while back, and it was fairly good, until the end. It used an ending that movies and books fall back on far too often, thus it's predictable. Oh well.
listening: A live version of Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" had me in tears the other day.

online journals:

And the nomination period is open for the second quarter of the Diarist Awards, already. Check it out if you have something to nominate.
