November 24, 2004 ~ Big Spectacular Wonderful Changes

Wednesday.

how we open packages 'round here

That picture has absolutely nothing to do with the following entry, but it cracks me up every time I look at it, and Grouse recently complained that it has been a long time since I posted a Morgan picture (I won't explain the context of that conversation or Grouse would likely want to kill me...). heh.

I'm sorry, it is going to take me a while to get back in the habit of updating. At least I have some good news to share! No, not just good news. Great, fantastic, wonderful, spectacular news.

Now that Morgan and I both work at the college, we've been planning for quite a while to move closer to campus, rather than all the way across town. Our lease in our current house was due to end December 31st, and rent was going to increase in the New Year. We wanted to live somewhere where pets are allowed, anyway. The time to move had come. So, when a rental house on campus, subsidized through the college, came open last month, we applied.

And we didn't get it. And there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Okay, not really. But the emotional equivalent!) We were running out of time. We would have to renew our lease at our current house on a month to month basis, which is more expensive. We were not looking forward to losing a significant chunk of money every month.

But then, just in time, a second subsidized rental house opened up on campus. And we realized that this house was far more fitting for us anyway. Tucked back in the woods, right next to the college trails, with a fenced wooded yard, a little garden space out front, the house had tons of storage space, three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, hardwood floors, a bigger kitchen with more counter space and cabinet space, a swing set in the yard...

This place fit our tastes and our needs. This place is in the college community where almost all of our local connections lie. This place would be both secluded and within walking distance of our offices. This place we could see ourselves happy in for years. This place would allow for dogs, would be great for dogs, and even had space for a kennel in the fenced side yard. Most of all, this house would be great for kids, for a family.

Let me repeat that last line, because I just love the look of it:

Most of all, this house would be great for kids, for a family.

So we applied. And we just found out, end of last week. We got it. We got it! We'll be moving in to the little house in the woods, next to the trails, with the big front porch and the wooded side yard and the swing set and the perfect for dogs house and yard, and the tons of storage space and the two bath tubs (you've got to understand, our current house has no bathtub, nor did the dorms we lived in before. I've been tubless for the last six years!).

We will no longer be commuting all the way across town every day; we'll be walking. Our rent and utilities will be much less expensive. We will be much closer to the Wolf Rescue / Sanctuary where we volunteer. All of our local friends will be closer. If we decide that we like living at the college, we will be able to raise our children there.

We expect to move in come mid-December.

And none of that mentions the most immediate wonderful thing. We have talked to the proper authorities, and...

Do you remember Monty? Montague? The animal who stole my heart and taught me so very much. Well, his partnering with Meeja did not work out. Which means that he was back up for adoption.

I'm sure you see where this is headed. Nothing is set in stone yet, but we have gained permission from the college, and we have started the adoption process. Monty--that incredible creature with whom I have bonded, whom I love more than I can express--come January, Monty will probably have a home with two humans who love him more than they can ever put into words.

Footnotes:

weather: Rain for two days straight.
bookmarked: Essential Reiki, Diane Stein.
writing focus: A letter to our current landlord...
observation: A flock of bluebirds. Or, at least, the closest I've ever seen to a flock. Nine of them.
mail bag: A Birthday card from my father-in-law, and a beautiful Celtic painting on papyrus from my mother. (Yes, my birthday was on Sunday. I turned 25.)
hours hiked this year: 159
hours volunteered this year: 454
cooking: Veggie dogs. No, we don't do gourmet every night.
watching: Saw What the Bleep Do We Know? at the Fine Arts Theater. It was okay, but not good. I've just seen the same quantum physics point argued much more effectively in other movies.

online journals:

"I sent him my usual nonchalant email, in that casual tone that I adopt in a pitiful attempt to hide how desperately I need his response. "Hey Dad," I wrote. "I'll be in San Diego for Thanksgiving. Please let me know what your plans are." ~ Katherine in this entry of Dienu.
