December 24, 2004 ~ The Adoption Wait
Friday.
I woke well before the alarm, turned, tried to return to sleep. Finally, after several minutes of that, I couldn't stand it anymore. "Morgan." I snuggled closer. "Morgan."
"Wha...?"
"Our dogs are coming today!"
He smiled and cuddled closer.
Five minutes later, I squirmed around to face him. "Morgan?"
"Hmm?"
"Our dogs are coming today!"
"Yeah," he yawned.
Five minutes later. "Morgan?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we get up?"
Groan.
"...and finish the pen?"
Groan.
"Our dogs are coming today!"
He smiled. "Sweet puppies."
A few minutes later we found ourselves out in the icy cold twilight. I was wiring the dig-wire to the cattle panel, Morgan was mounting the gate and securing the two layers of cattle panel to one another.
My toes were frozen, my rear was numb from sitting in the cold, my hands and fingers ached and were cracked and bleeding from the cold and the dry and the cuts from the wire as I wove it, and the moisture in my breath coated my hair and scarf and froze it in place, but I didn't care, because our dogs are coming today. Today we'll no longer be just a couple. We'll be a family, a pack. Our dogs are coming today!
We finished the pen, then came inside checking the new house over once more to be certain that we hadn't missed anything in our dog-proofing. I ran to the store for another water bucket and their chicken dinner. We laid out the bowls on the kitchen floor and filled one with water, just in case they'd be coming inside, though it may take Monty a while to work up to that. We thawed out the turkey franks in the fridge. We set the collars and leashes out on the table. We put the crates together and set them up in the bedroom, fresh blankets spread across their floors. Old ratty towels were ready and folded next to the couch. Grooming brushes on the ataman.
Morgan went out and got some lunch for the people who are delivering them here; it's in the oven, staying warm. We unpacked a few remaining boxes. Now all we can do is wait, anxiously, for sweet Monty and Rose.
Our dogs are coming today!
