Monty and me

Monty tries desperately to fit on the couch with me while I read

Yesterday, I took Monty to the vet for what will hopefully be the last time for a while.

The several cuts on the back and bottom of his paw have completely healed. The front cut is completely healed in all of the places they could stitch it and is nearly healed in all of the places they could not.

The vet was very surprised by this. He had expected it to take much longer to heal.

I've been doing a long Reiki session every night, even though the nights were very late over the residency, in hopes that it could help a little. Maybe it has.

The abscess, however, had still not gone down, despite the month of antibiotics. So the vet, seeing that the antibiotics weren't working, decided to prescribe a different antibiotic.

And then he did something I don't usually expect Doctors to do. He said that the new antibiotic probably wouldn't work either, so he was going to show me a home remedy that almost always works. He packed and bandaged the paw in sugar. "Take the bandage off tonight, give him an Epsom salt soak for about five minutes, then let it air over night. Tomorrow morning, pack it in sugar again, soak at night, air, etc. Do that for three more days and see what happens."

It makes sense. I learned of my bladder and yeast infections: If I ate less sugar, they would go away much faster. Bacteria, yeast, et cetera--they feed on sugar. They're much happier if there is a lot of it in your system (hence, why I also cut all sugar out of my diet when I am ill). So, you put sugar on a wound, any bacteria present would be drawn to the sugar, away from the wound... at least, that's what I'm guessing. Interesting, huh?

Well, last night when I took the bandage off and soaked the paw, the abscess was already much, much better. This morning, even better. And we didn't start the new antibiotic until this morning, so it wasn't that.

Now, if they'd just told us that in the first place, maybe Monty wouldn't have this huge abscessed blister on his toe. Heaven forbid we actually heal it with something cheap that works, rather than the expensive medications that don't...

We're expecting to have Monty out of bandages in a week or so. (Which is good, because the materials for each bandage cost about $4. I could do without the extra $28 charge each week.) We'll see. If that happens, he'll soon be able to go outside again, soon be able to start hiking... Everything will be much easier once Monty is mobile, unbandaged, and able to get his paws a little dirty.

Monty and I were lying peacefully together, but Rose decided to try to join us and all hell broke loose. Instead of helping, Morgan reached for the camera.
