January 25, 2005 ~ Bad News and Good News

We did our taxes the other day. Turns out that even though we claimed zero exemptions and even had some extra withheld, we will still owe the government over eight hundred dollars. Why is it that since Bush's supposed tax cuts, and since the supposed abolition of the marriage tax penalty, Morgan and I have been paying more and more each year, even during the year that we made less?
Since the fact that we are going to have to apply for a credit card to pay for our taxes is too depressing to contemplate, I'll focus instead on the fact that Monty got to go on his first hike today.
It was a short hike, just over to Dogwood Pasture to watch the sunset and back, but he was an extremely happy boy:

When we got home afterwards, he laid down on the carpet and rolled around on his back, grinning like a fool, begging for belly rubs. I've never seen him so expressively joyous before, and it did my heart good.
