April 15, 2005 ~ Teeny Tiny Heart
Friday.
My child ~
I read in a book over a week ago that soon your heart would start beating that week. I called Morgan over and said, "This week our baby's heart will start beating."
Awe came over his face. "Really? I didn't realize the heart started so soon, after only four weeks. Wow. Teeny tiny heart!" He smiled.
I held my finger and thumb just barely apart and smiled, mimicking him, "Teeny tiny heart!"
All week, all I've had to do to make him smile is say, "Teeny tiny heart!"
Today, on a little black and white screen, we saw you for the first time. The woman working the machine pointed out the sack in my womb where you are. She showed us where your head and your rump were, and she measured you. Everything looked perfectly healthy.

Then she checked the rest of my womb (your womb?) to make sure all was well (and it was). She zoomed in a little and told us to look closely. A small portion of the screen was flickering rhythmically. "That's your baby's heart," she said.
Teeny tiny heart. Morgan leaned in close and smiled, watching that tiny rhythmic flicker. You are holding your father in awe already, little one.
heartbeats
I cannot put into words how badly you are wanted, how joyful we were to see that beating heart.
